MCA debt in Rhode Island
Rhode Island has about 116,100 small businesses, which account for roughly 51% of the state's employment, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy's 2025 profile. Health care, restaurants and retail employ the most people, and those are sectors where daily or weekly MCA debits are common.
Rhode Island MCA law: what actually protects you
Disclosure
Rhode Island has not enacted a commercial financing or MCA disclosure law, so funders don't have to show you a standardized total cost or APR before you sign.
Confessions of judgment
Rhode Island bars licensed lenders and loan brokers from taking confessions of judgment on most loans. Whether that reaches an MCA funder is a question for an attorney.
Usury
Rhode Island's usury cap is the greater of 21% or prime plus 9%, with no general exemption for corporations; only large commercial loans over $1 million meeting specific conditions are excluded (R.I. Gen. Laws § 6-26-2). If an MCA is treated as a loan, that cap can matter.
What this means for Rhode Island owners
Rhode Island's rules on confessions of judgment in business contracts aren't as clear-cut as in some states, so treat any confession clause as live until an attorney tells you otherwise. On the rate side, Rhode Island is one of the few states where usury law could still matter if an MCA is recharacterized as a loan, so the effective annual rate on each of your advances is worth calculating.

How we help Rhode Island owners
Our role is narrow on purpose: we're independent advisors, paid a flat fee, with no lender partnerships and no cut of any settlement. For Rhode Island owners that means a free first review of your MCA contracts and cash flow, then a written plan weighing reconciliation, renegotiation, refinancing, settlement through a licensed provider, or attorney review.
